Gauge

1 ripple measures approximately 3¾ inches (9.5 cm) from peak to peak.

Checking your gauge before starting is highly recommended to ensure your finished afghan turns out the correct size.

Stitch Explanation

dc3tog (double crochet 3 stitches together)

Yarn over and insert your hook into the next stitch, draw up a loop, yarn over, and pull through 2 loops. Repeat this process in the next 2 stitches until you have 4 loops remaining on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops to complete the decrease.

Pattern Notes

  • The afghan is worked in one piece, back and forth in rows.
  • The ripple pattern is formed by alternating peaks and valleys.
  • Peaks are created by working 3 double crochets into one stitch.
  • Valleys are formed using dc3tog decreases.
  • To maintain the ripple design, always keep the peaks and valleys aligned from row to row.
  • The wave effect becomes more visible after the first few rows, so don’t worry if it doesn’t appear immediately.

Chain 112.

Row 1

Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook (the skipped 3 chains count as a double crochet). Work 1 dc in each of the next 4 chains, dc3tog, then work 1 dc in each of the next 4 chains.

Work 3 dc in the next chain, 1 dc in each of the next 4 chains, dc3tog, and 1 dc in each of the next 4 chains. Repeat from * to * across the row. Finish with 2 dc in the last chain.

You should have 9 ripples across the row.

Row 2

Chain 3 and turn your work (this counts as a double crochet). Work 1 dc in the first stitch, then 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, dc3tog, and 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches.

Work 3 dc in the next stitch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, dc3tog, and 1 dc in each of the next 4 stitches. Repeat from * to * across the row. Finish with 2 dc in the top of the turning chain.

Repeat Row 2 until the blanket measures approximately 45 inches (114.5 cm) from the beginning, or until almost all the yarn has been used.
